  • Gateway Apartments is the most exploitative, overpriced, terrible apartment complex in Tempe. The Gateway management used to throw big pool parties for the residents, where underage drinking was overlooked, but after two sexual assaults occurred during one, the Tempe police began cracking down. The management hates to acknowledge the sexual assaults. To any current residents of Gateway, if you want to get out of your lease early, just bring them up during your negotiation, say you don't feel safe in the complex, and I guarantee they will relent. I shared an upgraded four bedroom with two others guys, and all the appliances and furniture were the absolute cheapest available and constantly broke. The living room couch seemed to be designed to be impossible to sleep on, I guess to keep people from staying over. The maintenance people would constantly come in to "fix" things nobody had requested, never giving any notice or leaving a note when no one was home. The only reason we knew that they had been by was by the tools they left behind. The front office is staffed almost entirely by idiot 20 year olds which, as an idiot 20 year old myself, I could tell you is a terrible idea. After getting charged for paying my rent late my first month, I realized that the guy who processed my lease had no idea what "prorated" meant when I asked him when I should pay my rent. The people working in the office are also residents of Gateway, and pretty much act as RAs for each apartment bloc. There are so many great apartment complexes in Tempe, don't let Gateway's roommate matching service or room-by-room split rent tempt you into renting from them. It is so overpriced and poor quality, the only thing that is keeping them in business is cultivating the image of a "party" apartment complex. After a while of living there, you will not wonder why everyone at ASU calls it "Rapeway."
