Not all nice things come in a pretty wrapper. Such is the case of Phoenix House of Pizza & Subs. The wrapper on this pizza joint is an old Circle K. Located behind the 7-Eleven on the NEC of Van Buren & 48th Street, this place has apparently been around a while.
The inside of the location is simple and clean. It's actually nicer than you might expect from the outside. And it was busy this past Friday at lunch time. There were lots of carry out orders while me and my co-workers dined in.
One of the guys in our group recommended the pastrami sandwich. He ordered one and it looked really good! It had a nicely toasted bun and looked bigger than a "foot long". I split a 16" Deluxe pizza with the other guy in our group. This looked more like an 18" pizza when we received it! The thin crust was delicious and stood up when you picked up a slice. There was plenty of left overs even after enjoying four slices (see photo).
While I will admit this isn't the best pizza I've ever tried, it's certainly better than any pizza chain. And the service is always friendly! It's obvious that Phoenix House has been around for a reason. Even more impressive when you consider they are only open Monday though Friday from 10-4.
