| - To be truly honest, I would have to say good old Pappas has had a slight decline in service and food quality since its initial opening. This is especially apparent during its busy times, which is practically every lunch, evening and weekends. The wait time is ridiculous during these meal rushes.
The last two times that I was there in mid May and just a few weeks ago, my dinner companions and I haven't been able to sit in the normal dining area due to the millions of people already waiting before us. Now don't get me wrong, the patio and bar area are comfortable but sometimes you just want to sit at a normal table. I would definitely suggest trying to avoid the lunch and dinner crowds, by either showing up once they open their doors or maybe and hour or two before they close them, just about any other time outside of that its going to be a mad house in this place. Another thing about seating, on occasion the host or hostess will try to seat you at a back table next to the restrooms. If you're uncomfortable with that (being a 'germ-phobic' person or just don't like the close proximity of the restroom and its visitors) you can ask for another table, they may shoot you a dirty look, but they'll reseat you elsewhere.
Now to talk about the food. I haven't strayed from my usual dishes all that much, but they're are quite a few for them to be usuals. I would have to say, I'm quite a fan of the hot and fresh bread (on some days it is) and a bowl of their Crawfish bisque. Another favorite of mines is the Salmon Salad, sometimes they under cook the salmon despite how I tell the waiter/waitress for them to have the chef cook it throughly. Other days I'm quite keen on the Po'boys, I jump between a catfish and shrimp combo and an oyster and shrimp combo. Here as well, I tell the waite/waitress that I'd like my oysters fried "hard" (if I wanted them soupy, I would have ordered them right out the half shell) to avoid a soggy Po'boy and I'd have to say 5/10 times they actually did listen and the oysters didn't soggy up the sandwich.
I have a knack of making the appetizers meals. One of my new usuals has been the fried alligator and I would have to say, it is pretty good, but I don't like how they go skimpy on the shoe string fries. Those things are too good to hold back on! Before the alligator came along, I use to order the fried crawfish appetizer, which is about the only dish there besides some of the desserts that I have nothing to complain about it.
And oh my if you think the dessert tray looks good, it tastes even better. I have had everything on there that doesn't have chocolate in it or on it. The sweet potato pecan pie, I must say is one of my favorites, the creme brulee, for the few times I have had it, is scrumptious, and I love Nila Waffers, so the banana pudding is pretty yummy if you like bananas and pudding.
So, if you catch Pappas on a good day and time, I would say you're looking at a 5-star rated dining experience. But if its busy, crowded and the kitchen and staff are overwhelmed you may be looking at a 3.5 or a 4.
