| - I'm a comedian as a hobbyist, but more than that I'm a comedy fan. I like to go to shows and have been to all the clubs in NYC and LA, as well as locally. I watch Live at Gotham and listen to comedy podcasts, I always visit the local clubs when I travel. Stand Up Scottsdale is the place where the comedians' comedians come to perform. I've seen Lachlan Patterson here twice, who is an amazing up and coming comic, Kyle Kinane, Rich Vos and above all else, Ted Alexandro among many others. Generally the quality of comics is better than at the Improv or Stand Up Live for 1/3 the price because they are getting comics in their prime, but the average person just doesn't know them yet. These aren't comics who were on Saturday Night Live in the 90s. It's not a nostalgia club.
I've performed here at the open mic, and I've performed at the Comedy Spot open mic long ago, which is a rival club in town. The Comedy Spot bans any comedian for the audacity to perform on even an open mic at Stand Up Scottsdale and sends the comics threatening emails to that effect. On top of that, the Comedy Spot books Skippy from Family Ties to give an example of common draw for them. With rare exception, the only really good comics at the Comedy Spot are the local Arizona comics who open the shows. I recall he did get Nick DiPaolo once in all fairness.
So, bottom line. If you want to see great comics on the way up that comedians want to see, come to Stand Up Scottsale. If you want to support an "On the Waterfront" style bully who foists his high school drama on others, see below, go to the Comedy Spot. Keep in mind that new comics, hell all comics, need to perform as much as possible and in any place they can, ideally in front of tough audiences. Here is what the Comedy Spot sends to people who want to do their open mic. Tell me he isn't nuts:
"There are 2 professional comedy clubs in this town, The Comedy Spot and the Improv. That's it. Only two. There are a few comedy open-mics in town as well. There is however, one group that we DO NOT endorse, as well as if ANYONE performs with this group or at their attempt at a show, we will not deal with, on ANY level, pro shows, open-mics, etc. SO KNOW THIS WELL, prior to submitting any dates. This group is headed by a person named howard h, there is also, kengo s and ricardo r. They are attempting to put on shows in scottsdale. Without going into too much of the filthy details, they have talked garbage and slandered this club, the comics that perform here, the classes, the open-mics, the club owner as well as his family. Posting garbage all over the net, as well as directly spreading lies to people. DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THIS. Therefore, regarding this particular group only, we will not work with ANYONE that deals with that particualr group. They are best to be avoided, they are not good people, nor good for comedy. Don't risk being pulled off the line up here. If it's found out, we will just pull your dates here."
