| - My family and I stayed in Phoenix last week and we were lucky enough to be a couple minutes drive from this amazing museum! We were curious about it ever since it was mentioned by the concierge at a presentation at our hotel since it was apparently an attraction that everyone loved going to. I also looked up TripAdvisor and Yelp reviews on this place before deciding if it was worth going or not as I was skeptical about the $20 price tag and just thinking about if we would even have time to do it with all the things there were to do in Arizona in general. I have to say that it was definitely worth the money and time!!! I spent about 2.5 hours here and easily could have spent another 1.5 or 2 hours here!
My cousin and I ended up going last Friday for just the general admission - we skipped the Dragons and Vines exhibit since it was extra. Upon entering the first few galleries on the ground floor, we were already so impressed by the many musical instruments on display!
It was even more overwhelming (in a good way!) when we went up to the second floor which featured musical instruments from around the world. There were different rooms for Asia, Europe, Canada & U.S., Africa, etc. In each room, each country had its own display of instruments, clothing used in dances and video footage of how those instruments are used in ceremonies, rituals or everyday life. There were several countries that I didn't even realize had such a varied selection of instruments - lots of fun facts and so much to see here! It still amazes me to think about how much time it must have taken to accumulate such a vast collection of instruments and all the footage here!
We finished off our time here by going back to the ground floor gallery dedicated to several artists' instruments such as John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Carlos Santana, etc. just to name a few. Also on the ground floor is the Exhibition Gallery where you can explore and play with about 60 instruments, which was fun!
Other miscellaneous things to know about the museum:
-It is open until 5pm
-There is a cute gift shop with great finds such as nice t-shirts, record clock, artwork, musical themed books and displays, etc.
-There is a café inside the museum that we didn't go to but I've heard the food is good
-Plenty of parking spots in their large parking lot
-Afternoons seem to be quieter from what I heard since field trips sometimes take place on weekday mornings
-Restrooms are maintained very well :)
I definitely recommend spending a few hours here if you're ever in Phoenix and really can't say enough amazing things about this place!!!
