  • *Update* After having the doctors office tell me they are not responsible for the actions of the doctor, I filed an appeal and complaint like my insurance suggested. The staff member of the billing office I originally spoke with will no longer return my calls so I spoke to a Supervisor, JoAnn, who tries the "if it's documented it was done". That may work on someone who has never worked in this field but that is not how the AG, OIG and FBI look at it and I do know what happens when a doctor is caught committing fraud, it's serious business. JoAnn then tries to tell me that the billing office is not responsible for the actions of the office and since money seems to be the only thing on these people's mind the only way to get their attention is money. I disputed the charge they put on my credit card for my surgery deposit. All the claims have processed and they over-collected by over $600. In speaking to the office after receptionist Rachel hung up on me 3 times because she didn't want to answer any questions I find out that the surgery scheduler Sonya has no idea about billing and doesn't know what surgeries can/can't be billed together so this would explain why someone would collect $847 on a surgery that can actually only be billed for $600. When I question office manager Kimberly about that she has no reason, only that "this is the policy." I finally got Leslie the Supervisor of A/R for IronWood Physicians Billing to speak with me who advised me that it doesn't matter that the physician is committing fraud, they are not responsible. I also advised her of the office policy of over-collecting for surgery deposits because they are collecting for procedures that are not billable, in essence fraud, again Leslie's excuse was "Well, we have no control over what happens in the office." Being a previous biller/collector I can say that is very wrong. This office, doctor and billing office are breaking just about every insurance billing rule there is not to mention what would happen if they were audited which is what needs to happen. The physical office and billing office are BOTH responsible. The problem is no one takes the time to report these things. I would advise that NO ONE sees ANY doctor in this practice because if 1 doctor is billing fraudulently they are all doing it because they're getting away with it. From this experience I will NEVER see any doctor under the IronWood physicians umbrella. FYI -- I was also basically threatened by Leslie at the billing office that I would never be able to do anything about what they were doing as she "had spoken to her contacts at my insurance company." I immediately contacted my insurance company because this is so far beyond inappropriate there isn't a word but confirms my belief that the office knows they have acted inappropriately. My insurance company was definitely interested in hearing that Leslie at the billing office was trying to threaten and intimidate patients.
