| - I had heard about Rao's in New York for many years, so I was excited at the fact that myself and two friends were going here for dinner. We arrived for our reservation at around 7 p.m. after donating a few bucks to the poker machines at the bar just outside of Rao's. Unfortunately, Lady Luck still eluded me.
When you arrive at Rao's, you will notice some tables outside. I guess these tables are for those who want to dine Al Fresco. Inside, there is a bar and 2 other rooms. There is a side room that is designated as the "traditional" Rao's and then there is a back room the looks out over the pool. Although, I am sure to have lunch here would be distracting with the pool. Just as a tip, I highly recommend that you ask to be sat in the back room.
The hostess seated us at a nice table in the back room. The room is large, but not overly noisy. For an appetizer, we ordered the Frito Misto. I have had Frito Misto at other places and it has been overly breaded. This was perfect! You are also served a basket of bread and a trio of butter. There is regular, pedestrian butter. Spicy red pepper butter. And the best of the best, the onion butter. Just a little piece of heaven for your bread. I could have licked the plate, but that wouldn't be classy.
For my main course, I had the pork chop. I nice portion of double cut goodness. It is served with sauteed with hot and sweet peppers that added a nice flavor to the pork chop. The other two people I was with had the linguine and clams. They both said it was really good. The wine list is pretty extensive. We had a white wine from Sardinia that was selected with the help of the Somelier, Rose. There is also a full bar for those of you who aren't wineos.
A few tips:
Ask to be seated in the back room.
Make a reservation.
Valet parking at Cesars is $13.00.
