| - After moving to Hudson two years ago, we recently acquired a large breed puppy about 60 pounds (will get to be 100 or so). As such, I was looking to establish a relationship with a local groomer for the long-term - closer to us than Cuyahoga Falls (which offers several good groomers, but takes my a long time to get to and is out of my way).
After being told (rather abruptly) by another local salon (in Hudson proper) that they were not accepting new clients, I sought an alternative, and happened across Pets R Us Grooming online.
The proprietor was very warm, referring to my dog, and dogs in general, as "the babies". She is a very talkative and animated woman on the phone, and even more so in person. She knelt down right there and then, and "OK'd" lengths/shapes for the various parts (undercarriage, beard, feet, etc,) to make sure I was on the same page as to the desired length and style. The salon is not fancy - no marble sinks here - but extremely clean. But what's clear to me is that she LOVES dogs. For real, loves dogs and loves being with them, grooming them, talking to them - seems to have no problem with numerous doggy kisses, saliva and all the loveliness that our 4-leggers manifest. I don't think you could fake this level of delight, truly. Her philosophy on grooming, as she explained to me (in a nutshell) is that during a grooming the dog should enjoy itself, and be comfortable and not be traumatized as a result of grooming- essentially, the dog should leave the grooming session happy, soothed, and relaxed. Like I would if I was getting my own hair done.
Fair enough philosophy, but our "baby" is an immature behemoth, so I was curious as to see how things would pan out. When I returned (after some time, as this type of dog typically takes several hours), I saw that her promises rang true - the dog was very happy, and acted as if she had just played in the backyard for an hour. Dog and the groomer appeared to have a rapport that is unusual to see, particularly in the context of grooming, where the dog has to stand on the grooming table for a long time.
The haircut well done, and was as promised, and dog smelled great (I even got to approve the scent she selected, so it could be listed in my file). The price was half that of petsmart, and 2/3 of the other local salons, and I would attest to this if asked - so I am uncertain regarding the discrepancies in the pricing I saw (listed on the wall very clearly) today as opposed to that of a previous reviewer.
I have my next appointment booked. I suggest you try for yourself. While the shop is not the fanciest, nor to they carry organic food or dog swag -- the groomer has philosophy, attitude and passion that are the true qualities that count to our pets!
