  • When it comes to cupcakes, or any type of dessert-esque treat, they quality must justify the price. In the case of 21 Cakes, I find that this is not so. Their cupcakes are far from exceptional. And quite frankly, for around $3.75 a piece I would rather make 2 dozen cupcakes out of a box and call them "gourmet cupcakes." Anyhow, I came here with my mother on a Sunday morning after breakfast at the nearby Wildflower. They must have just opened, because there was no one in the store, and the two girls in the back looked like they were still setting things up on the kitchen tables. The place itself is actually really cute inside. It looks like a French countryside home- decor, furniture and all. There was one display case, which featured a few different flavors of macarons, and to our dismay about only 5-6 different cupcake flavors. From what I can recall, they were all pretty ordinary flavors: the typical red velvet, chocolate with white frosting, salted caramel, and a few others that weren't very noteworthy. Expecting to have a wide variety of flavors, I was a bit disappointed when it came time to choose some cupcakes, as I had to settle with a flavor that didn't entice me just by looking at it. I chose the salted caramel and my mother chose the chocolate with white frosting (which was dyed green for some reason). The two employees were very nice and courteous, and checked us out promptly. We inquired about their classes which they had advertised on the chalkboard, but they seemed a bit scatterbrained in describing what classes took place when (the offer two: a macaron class and a cake/cupcake class), and what they included. When we got home, we cut the cupcakes in half (as we were sharing with two other people) and were happy to find that the cake portion was very moist on both selections. I was disappointed to see that my "salted caramel" cupcake was just a chocolate/devil's food cake with what tasted like vanilla frosting, drizzled with caramel sauce and sprinkled with sea salt crystals. after taking a bit, I have to admit that the caramel cupcake was not that good at all. Like I mentioned, the frosting was basically just a vanilla flavored base, drizzled with a small amount of caramel sauce. The sea salt on top was simply overbearing. As I bit into the cake, all I could taste was salt, which made it a very unappetizing half-eaten cupcake. I understand the concept of the whole "salted caramel movement" that has been sweeping the dessert industry lately: salty and sweet, two opposites that attract, complementary tastes, one brings out the flavor of the other, etc. however 21 Cakes simply missed the mark on that by upping the salt ratio and skimping on caramel's share. The chocolate/vanilla frosting cupcake was equally as moist, but honestly nothing to rave about. It was the equivalent of what I could make in my own kitchen, using the cheap store-bought tub of Pillsbury icing and box of cake mix. Personally, I don't think I would waste the $7 and change on these cupcakes again . The employees were nice, the store was very cute, but the reason why the store is there- the cupcakes- were very lackluster, and quite frankly, below average.
