  • Update II: Garage door has been painted - updating rating as promised. Update: The owner called this evening. That is impressive. I'm bumping this from a 1 star (Brigadier General) to a 3-star (Lieutenant General) review. They are going to paint both doors for free if I buy the paint. Understandable as this puts the onus on me to ensure the paint is a match. If this turns out, I'll bump this review up to General Patton level. It is refreshing to know the owner wanted to make it right. That must be why it is so highly rated (and what drew me to them in the first place). I want to add the technician who installed the door was spectacular. He was an absolute professional. He is welcome back anytime to have a beer with me and meet my family; yeah, he was that awesome. Original Review: Pretty bummed out by A1. I called after I saw they have a AAA and military discount. They have great Yelp reviews. Our relationship started off great. But as with many relationships which are not meant to last, it ended horribly. This is our saga. I needed a garage door partially replaced and one another was not closing correctly. Both my garage doors have windows across the top. They sent out Jon (name changed as not to send him to my house with a bat) . 1) They called to cancel my appointment 18 hours prior to its scheduled start time. We were able to get an earlier time in the day (from 8am to 7am) so all was well. Disaster avoided 2) Jon was 10 minutes late. He sat in his truck for another 5 minutes until I opened the garage door. Suddenly, he was ready to do some garage door work. 3) The door was old so there was no way to replace part of it. All or nothing. However, according to Jon, I was in luck. This was a great time to get a new door. I ask what it would cost to get the one with the windows as I was willing to replace both but the HOA would want them to match. Numbers flew like ducks. Rapid fire. Finally, I realized it was cheaper to just replace the one door with the windows (a more expensive option) than to replace both with windowless panes. Due to the current sale, the AAA and military discount do not apply. 4) Jon stated the second door had a wiring problem. I'll return to this in a moment but Jon needs an education on the garage door safety lazer. 5) I as Jon "hey Jon, buddy, pal, friend, as I mentioned earlier, the HOA wants these doors to match. As I am only replacing one, is there going to be a problem with the color?". Jon replies: "No way. The color of the almond door matches the other door and the house. You are all set!" Happiness reigns. 6) Jon does the estimate, I sign it. $680 for the door. Jon leaves. All is well. 7) Frantic call. Wrong price for the door. Actual cost is $880. Still cheaper than replacing both doors. I say "just replace it". 8) Installer comes. Great guy. He replaces the door. He looks at the other door and says "who ever told you it was a wiring issues is a moron. You just need to adjust the safety lazer". He does this. Door works great. What little credibility Jon had has vanished. 9) New door installed. I sign. All is well. As I close the door, the color is not even close to the color of my house or the other door. Helen Keller could have seen it was much more pale. 10) I call A1 to let them know I am not impressed. They are more than willing to come out and paint it. It's usually $250 but, for me, they will only charge $150 if I buy the paint. Now, the one door is officially more expensive than replacing both without the windows. 11) I email A1 on Friday to let them know I am none to happy about the events. I pretty much wrote this exact review to them. No response. So Yelp it is! Conclusion: I feel I am being nickled and dimed here. The low estimate, the increased price, the cost to paint. I'm more than willing to pay for the service but when it costs more have one door replaced than 2, I get a bit miffed. So the ball is in your court A1. Morgan
