  • I came here on my very first adventure to Las Vegas. It's the last standing casino still in operation of the first casinos I visited. This casino is in the Fremont Street Experience area in downtown Las Vegas. I come here every time I visit Las Vegas. I have to, I'm drawn here. This was the third hotel I visited on my first trip to Las Vegas, the Hacienda was the first but it's gone now and the Stardust was second also gone and then worked my way North to the Golden Nugget. This is the one I really wanted to see because I had heard a lot about it prior to coming to Vegas and I saw it in Viva Las Vegas and one of the James Bond movies. It's changed quite a bit since my first visit. At that time it had only one hotel tower and that was pretty new, only two years old. Now there are three hotel towers and the Golden Nugget is the largest hotel in the downtown area with nearly 2,500 rooms. It's one of the nicer hotels downtown too. The gigantic hotel sign that was at the Fremont Street main entrance when I came here the first time is different, not sure when the got rid of the old one and put up the new one. I don't remember seeing it at the "boneyard"/ Neon museum. Hope it's still around somewhere. Also, it had the largest gold nugget in the world there I. The lobby but it's gone now, not sure what happened to that either, it was something to see, to bad it's gone. The Golden Nugget was originally built in 1946, making it one of the oldest in the city but you wouldn't know it because of all the upgrades and renovations. This is in a sense where Steve Wynn got his start and became a majority owner in 1973, at that time he was the youngest casino owner in Las Vegas. My favorite feature of this place is the pool. The best in downtown Las Vegas and even better then most on the strip, it has three levels, swim up bars and even a slide that goes through their shark tank. You don't have to be a hotel guest to go to the pool, you can pay a fee to get in and believe me you'll find that it's worth it. It's like $25 during the week and a little more on weekends and holidays. There are several nice restaurants here to enjoy and of course some nice bars too. Our favorite is their bar outside on Fremont Street Experience. Drink prices are reasonable. Room prices like most Vegas hotels are all over the place. I would suggest the King Tower with a pool view except during the winter when the pool closed. Expect to pay about $150 or more a night here. A lot of money has been put into the Golden Nugget over the last 10 or 15 years and it really shows, it's a very nice place. I spent some time gambling here and time at the bars. Employees are nice throughout the place. It's clean and nice. Not a huge gaming area but it's decent. Minimum bets are cheap too. It's a nice place and I'll be back next year for sure.
