Sobeys Urban Fresh is not so fresh these days. This store at 81 St Clair Avenue E has become pretty lax with their produce employees hygene. These are some of the reasons why I will not buy my groceries from this location. I walked by the guys stocking fresh veggies and one of them sneezed into a box of carrots. The other day another employee had packages of cellophane wrapped fresh fish piled up in his apron his lap as he restocked the shelf for fish. The deli counter employees do not wear gloves when handling cheese or deli meat. Some of the produce employees including one of the managers (who wears a red apron) stand outside smoking and when they go back in to the store I have never seen them change their apron or wash their hands. They have used the same cloth to wipe down a counter that has had meat and non meat on it. If the people who work at this Sobeys are following the proper food handling hygene requirements it sure is not visable or noticeable.
I was in Loblaws and Metro recently and their employees were wearing head coverings, changed gloves with each new customer they served and their aprons looked clean and fresh.
Some of the female employees at Sobeys wear a lot of jewellery, long nails and sweaters or jackets over their dirty looking aprons and I just cant buy produce that they handle.
This store needs some major improvements in the cleanliness department. Maybe making them all reapply for their food handlers license, might help. Sobeys could also designate another area for their smokers that is not in full view of the front doors.
