  • Now only an hour outside Vegas with the new highways! The security line slows things down a bit. Before you approach the visitor's center, you'll have to stop, roll down your window, and smile at a ranger, and that creates a hideous traffic jam during peak times. i'm still trying to figure out how that's going to deter any sort of mischief, but what do I know. The visitor center parking is tight and slow, and will set you back $10. So pay your taxes to build this thing, and pay another $10 to use it. We finagled our way down to the visitor center and found that the main $30 tour sells out early in the morning, since they only take 20 people per tour. I'm thinking they should take more than 20, or set up more tours to avoid pissing off tourists (like me) who can't get out there first thing. Fortunately, you can still do the $15 power plant tour late in the day, and that's pretty cool too. The big tour, however, leads you through tunnels and shows you all kinds of behind-the-scenes stuff that provides ample photo opportunities. Skip the movie at the beginning. There's nothing you haven't seen on Discovery. And the visitor's center museum is kind of lame too.
