  • I've been doing research and such for my upcoming honeymoon to Spain (brag brag brag), and part of that has been watching lots of episodes of Made in Spain. It was on Hulu, so why the hell not, right? I'd been aware of José Andrés for awhile, but in watching his show I've discovered that he's kind of freaking awesome. So perhaps this was the motivation for me finally trying one of his restaurants on my most recent trip to Vegas. Or maybe it's just that I really, really like Spanish food. Or both. I think it's both. Anyway, I rounded up five food-loving dining companions and together we ventured into Jaleo on one fine Saturday night just after my 30th birthday. We were seated quickly and given iPads on which to choose drinks. I see the reason for doing this (because the wine list we were presented was a lot different than the one on the web site, so it seems they do a lot of updating), but none of us could really get it to work right (and at least half of the folks at the table own their own iPads). I think I accidentally turned the thing off two or three times. But after some fumbling, we successfully ordered our wines. I wish I could tell you what I shared with my fiance, but it is not listed on their website. So I can tell you it was dry, white, and awesome. Next, onto the food! We were six very hungry people and we ordered many, many things of supreme deliciousness. The canelones were the highlight for me, primarily because of the perfectly browned manchego cheese on the top. Heavenly, you guys. Some other things that were particularly ASTONISHING: - the veal cheeks - the bacon wrapped dates (I know this is on every menu, but the fact that they were fried made them at least 50% better than any others I've had). - the stuffed piquillo peppers (though the ones at Julian Serrano are still better; don't tell José I said that) - the sliders (get the Iberico bacon!) We ordered the olives and one of my friends really didn't care for the liquid olives, but the rest of us approved of the FLAVOR EXPLOSION. Nothing else missed for anybody. Service here was just fantastic. Our waiter was super helpful with lots of recommendations, and was able to help us figure out how many orders of each thing to get. I really liked how they paced out the tapas. At a lot of other small plates spots, I sometimes feel inundated because everything seems to come out at once. Here they made it so that we were able to enjoy one or two dishes at a time, and I really appreciated that. Yeah, everything is expensive here, but you're on The Strip. We were all quite full for about $80/person, which is well into special occasion range, but totally worth it. And some have said it's too loud in here, but the place was packed and none of us had any trouble hearing each other at the table. Maybe we're just loud. Oh, and José totally replied to a tweet I wrote about the restaurant while we were still in the restaurant, and I am easily impressed so it was the coolest thing ever. With all of this in mind, I would officially like to give this restaurant a Hell yeah. Hell yeah.
