| - If Yelp allowed it. I'd give this place no star.
My first time I went to Le Petit Castor, I had a GREAT time. Once the doorman let us into the (apparently) "private party" we were good-to-go and the place was fun, energetic with a lot of dancing and mingling.
Unfortunately, my second time in the restaurant was a massive let down and like another poster stated "Le Pissy Customer Service."
I went with a friend around 4pm. Although it was a LOVELY, sunny day, the doors to the outside patio weren't open. Despite this, we thought it couldn't hurt to ask if we could sit outside.
When we entered the restaurant, 3 females stood behind the bar and stared at us for about 30 seconds. Note that, the place is small, there was one table seated in the restaurant and the the bar has a perfect view of the front door. As if finally deciding to lose at the game of "Chicken" I approached the girls (who were still staring!!! at us) to ask if we could sit outside. One of the girls came over, SIGHED, ROLLED HER EYES and said "I guess." (Like, an exaggerated, elongated passive-aggressive sigh). I was shocked.
Another of the girls came over, asked if we were there for drinks or to eat as well. We responded. She walked away without saying anything. She returned with a menu and we ordered beers. When she returned, we ordered a sampling of items: brussel sprouts, salad, fries, olives, etc. When they arrived, everything was lack-lustre. The olives were nothing more than what you would find at the olive bar at your average grocery store and the servers forgot to bring out a final item as there was no quality check. When I went inside and approached them to advise of the missing item, again - - a sigh. The food was beyond disappointing. I understand that these were essentially apps, but if a restaurant can't deliver on the small stuff there's no point in trying out more challenging creations
Before we finished our meal, the bill came. We didn't ask for it. No one came to see if we wanted anything else to drink, eat, etc.
One of the three girls seemed like she realised the other two were being huge bitches and tried to save the situation as she collected our payment. She was telling us about being from Halifax, etc). By that time it was too late.
Because I've worked in food-service and other customer service areas, I am a fair tipper and it's almost always based on how the server treats me, and their attitude in handling any issues. In this case, those girls deserved nothing -- and got nothing. I felt very European, and it was liberating. :)
Never have I ever been to a restaurant and treated as such an inconvenience (and an afterthought). These girls CLEARLY didn't want to be there and didn't want anyone else to be there either.
Anyway, prior to this unfortunate experience, I attempted to visit a couple of times late in the evening since I had such a good time during my first visit. Each time, I was met by a doorman with a bad, authoritative attitude who wouldn't make eye-contact. You know the type. As they would gaze off to the right...or left, he would tell me (or the air) that the restaurant was closed for a "private party."
With service (and now, a reputation, I see) based on this, how are they able to book all of these "private parties" each night? Actually, I don't believe they're private at all but just a doorman who's been given too much authority and a restaurant that can't justify its pretension.
