| - "So where are you from originally?"
That's usually the first question you get when meeting someone for the first time. Most people who live here didn't start out here. The born & raised crowd is rare, so essentially Vegas is a melting pot. Which is cool, you meet all walks of life here.
Everyone knows it was never my first choice or even my choice at all. And I'll be blunt, when I moved here from Los Angeles I absolutely hated it. But one thing about Vegas it definitely grows on you. Yes it's a tourist town, most sought after destinations are. But the upside, there are a limitless amount of things to do and places to eat. And no we don't all work at casinos or live on the strip. There's much more to Vegas than you think. As with everything in life, it's what you make of it.
Pros: It's very convenient, just about any business you need is open 24 hours. Very helpful when most everyone works the graveyard shift. Everything is about a 20-25 minute drive away. Surprisingly lots of parks and bike trails. Not to mention Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Mt. Charleston, etc. Not as congested as most major cities and the cost of living is what draws most people here. The "locals discount" is a pretty good perk as well. And I'm sure you already know but the nightlife is second to none. A plethora of nightclubs, day clubs, bars, lounges, shows, festivals, and conventions. As far as entertainment goes, we have it all! : )
Cons: The heat! It can be unbearable, I'm talking about 117 for three days straight. 90 degrees at 3am. It gets to the point where 100 degrees is a good day. We have two seasons here. Summer & Winter. It took me about 3 years to finally adjust. It can reach well below the 20s during the winter so bring your warmest coat and lots of lotion for the extremely dry skin you'll experience your first year here. And it goes without saying that it is a tourist town so a lot of drunk a-holes at any given time but that's easily avoided as long as you steer clear of the strip. Museums are far and few which is a bit disappointing but what you'd expect from a city with the nickname "Sin City".
Adapting here isn't too difficult. No matter who you are there's probably something for you. Maybe not everything you want but hey, you can't have it all. I've grown to love my town. I'm sure I won't end up here but I'm glad to call Vegas home for now. Mostly I'm just grateful for the people I've met. They have made all the difference.
