| - I'm weird about feet. Okay, what person isn't to some degree? So when I got a one hour session for feet (foot?) reflexology from Groupon for Happy Foot Spa in my Christmas stocking, I was a bit weary, but also intrigued. They've recently moved locations from the Vaughan Mills area to Edgeley which happens to be all of 2 minutes from my office in a relatively large plaza. The outside is a bit, well, bleak and can look a bit dodgy. The inside, however, is a different story. It's been nicely renovated with hardwood floorings running throughout the front foyer and into the service room. You leave your shoes at the door and switch into slippers (which I am assuming they do clean as there is a basket there for 'used slippers.')
Inside the service room, there's 4 chairs with 4 individual ottoman's set in front of them. A TV mounted to the wall took up most of the free wall space. Sheer curtains were drawn across the windows for the sake of privacy, and there was wall mounts to hang up your jackets.
I was wondering what the purpose of the ottoman was initially, but I quickly found out once the massage therapist entered the room. She had me sit on the the ottoman while she pulverized my back like it was unruly pizza dough. This sounds more intimidating than it was, I assure you. In fact, the knot that has been an unseen accessory in my shoulder for the past 6 months is now gone. After the neck/shoulder/arm beat down, came the reflexology.
I have a weird thing with people staring at me intently. It makes me feel uncomfortable, like I'm being studied for a test that I'm failing. The therapist studied me for about 10 minutes before I finally found my nerve to make eye contact with her when she pressed down with what I thought was pretty hard on the sole of my foot and I saw stars. "Stomach." She assured me. Stomach? What? Her thumb moved 10 cm's downwards closer to my heel and I resisted the urge to jerk my foot away.
"Sleep."
Sleep?
It took me a minute to realize that she meant the mild pain I was feeling was associated to problematic parts of the body. For some, the evident language barrier may become a source of frustration, and in most cases, this wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. However, to silence my own curiosity, I would have reaaaaaalllllllly liked to have picked her brain some more about all the pressure points and what each point was related to. When I tried to probe for more information, she got a bit nervous and advised her English was pretty minimal. Which was a bit of a bummer as I wouldn't be able to quell my incessant need to know.
I didn't really have any expectations in my head going in, but leaving, I had a new found appreciation for the art of reflexology. Who knew so many points in one's feet could directly correlate with so many different things. [I suffer with sleep deprivation, perpetually consuming foods that my naturopath has long since told me not to, and I am a sloucher to my grandmother's horror -- all areas of which she pointed out to me in so few words.]
