  • My first thought about LA Fitness was "Oh geez, a gym in a strip mall? Are you serious???" And then I remembered that it was convenient to my house and next to the Market District, so I should get over myself and just check it out. I'm glad I did. It was really easy to sign up for a free guest pass online - just click and print - and I highly recommend doing so. It's always nice to be able to see the facilities in person before plunking down any money. We checked out the space on a Sunday and got in a light workout with absolutely no sales pressure or funny looks from the actual members. We were impressed enough to talk with someone about officially signing up, and the only negative thing I can say about that experience was that we had to HUNT DOWN A SALES GUY. I found that pretty odd, but I guess they are just that laid back about the whole membership process. A bit frustrating, I admit, but better than the "if you don't sign up we'll call you and email you every day until you break down" tactic that I feared, so I really can't complain too much. Let me just share a quick lists of the good and the bad here, before this gets too long. Pros: - Very afforadble. We are paying less than $60 for two people per month. - Not intimidating. The people who work there and work out there seem really nice. - There seems to be enough equipment to go around. I've been when it was very busy (a Thursday evening around 7) but I still didn't have to wait longer than a minute or two for a machine. Cons: - The women's locker room is not something I would want to walk around on barefoot. DEFINITELY bring flip flops if you take a shower or go swimming. - There are no water fountains upstairs by the weight machines. I find this so, so, odd. - You have to remember to bring your own towel if you go swimming. Not awful, but would be a nice amenity in case you forget. N.B.: My rating of this LA Fitness branch is just based on my experience there. I know nothing of other gyms in and around Pittsburgh or how this place compares.
