| - They say that the third time's the charm. This might be the case for Sunset Park'd.
Although I'd actually gone to this half-year's Great American Foodie Fest, I was eager to try several local food trucks at what might be referred to as the 3rd Annual Sunset Park'd event. Boasting a total of 33 food trucks this year, and with noticeably more attendees, this event has something for almost everyone. There are games scattered around the festival grounds, as well as a kids' area with slides, rock climbing, and bubbles on water. There are also a few maps located on huge sandwich boards, which is a new thing and a nice touch for those who don't feel like walking around the relatively small venue.
My biggest complaint last year was about their web site (sunsetparkd.com) and other online presence. They improved this year by reliably posting all of the trucks on the Food Trucks web page this year. They also provided comprehensive info on non-food vendors, entertainment (including music, dancers, and the kids' activities), some sort of VIP section w/ alcohol tasting (didn't bother looking into this but it was $10, whereas the event itself is still free).
The web site also had details about something they're piloting this year called "Tasting Dishes." Only eight food trucks bought into this idea, and they only provided very simple if inexpensive food items. I don't really see the point unless you're bringing kids or flying solo at the event. You might as well split the food trucks' menu items with your friends/family.
I'll stick to individual business places for detailed reviews, but most of the food trucks that I tried this year were awesome. I was a huge fan of Utah-based Waffle Love at the other food truck gathering, and their inclusion raised my probability of going from 90% to 100%. Their St. George truck again represented the waffle empire proudly in my book, and it's a feather in Sunset Park'd's cap to have this out-of-state food truck around. As for other businesses, Truck U BBQ had an awesome burnt ends "burrito," Stripchezze brought it with their bacon jam in the Jam On It sandwich, and The Cookie Bar had some awesome baked treats, some involving alcohol. I was underwhelmed by Rolling Fusion, but that's only one miss out of my busy afternoon.
I'm again very happy that Sunset Park'd has brought together local food trucks in a free admission setting. Aside from this year's questionable placement of tables/seats only at the far ends of the event area (nothing but grass and sand in the middle), I can only think of a better social media presence as an area of improvement for next year. And I do expect to see them once again next year.
