Pros: amazing pastries, aesthetically pleasing, helpful staff
Cons: it's definitely a splurge
Wow. Now this is how pastries are supposed to taste like. I went in to Butter Bakery not really knowing what to buy. Lucky for me, the staff was kind enough to recommend me some of their best sellers. I went with the strawberry matcha danish and the strawberry cream croissant. When he was packing up my order, I was surprised to see how much care he took to put the pastries in the bags. Maybe I'm just used to Chinatown style bakeries manhandling my steamed buns but wow this was a nice change of pace. Now for the taste.
Strawberry matcha danish: This was the first one I ate. Let me tell you. After my first bite, I had to stop chewing for a moment to process how good it tasted. The pastry was buttery and flaky but still chewy. The matcha custard had slight bitter hints that went perfectly with the sweet and juicy strawberries. I was shook.
Strawberry cream croissant: Can you tell that I like strawberries? Well I'm happy to say that this pastry did not disappoint me either. I thought that the croissant would be too hard on the edges since it looked really crispy but boy was I surprised. As soon as I took a bite, everything just melted. Same flaky texture as the danish but dare I say it, more buttery. The custard is the perfect sweetness and the strawberries just tied everything together.
This has got the be the best bakery I have gone to in Toronto. Price wise, it is a little steep for a student budget but it is definitely a great treat. If you have a sweet tooth, do realize that their pastries are more subtlety sweet. Overall, wonderful bakery and I would definitely go back to try more of their wonderful creations.
