  • I'm not here to bash Henderson Animal Shelter: I totally recognize that they are not provided with adequate funding and are doing the very best they can. I respect that they are working with Petsmart to adopt animals, and overall, seem to be doing the very best with what they have -given the burden of tax cuts in the city of Henderson, NV. As a result, they are open only Mon-Sat (not Sunday) when the weekends, I would imagine, are when citizens are most likely to adopt. With that said, I recently adopted a pet and found the brunette with the long hair, who worked at the adoption cat center, front office, to be kinda rude, unhelpful over the phone, and the paper adoption form that she completed did not identify what company the microchip was from. Since the cat had a previous owner who did not choose to reclaim the cat, it would have been crucial AND helpful to have that information listed on the registration adoption form, so that I could properly register my new pet under my name and address for emergency contact. Instead, I had to research the microchip origins for myself, and it was a little bit of a pain. Otherwise, if you don't do this and your new pet were ever lost, the 'previous' owner would therefore be contacted and not you. It is crucial to identify what microchip company the pet was originally registered with AND that MUST be listed on the adoption form for the new owner. The person at the front office was sloppy in this detail -- and if it wasn't her fault, (but rather that of the shelter's policy) then it needs to be changed to help protect the adopted pet should it ever be lost again so that the new owner can reclaim the cat. Your goal as a shelter should NOT ONLY be to adopt lost/found cats but also to provide important details regarding microchip information to new owners -- so that if they were ever lost in the future, the new owner will be contacted. On another note, you might also be interested to know, that unlike Animal Foundation, Henderson does not work with Community Cat Coalition, C5, to return feral cats that have been properly registered, identified, and who have gone through the TNR process - so therefore, if picked up by Henderson Animal Shelter. I don't know if those ferals are killed or not at the Henderson Animal Shelter -- I hope not -- when all they would need to do is check if the animal is registered with C5. All animals should have the right to live.
