| - I've had a bad taste in my mouth about this place for a few years now, pardon the pun.
The pastries look great, the food is tempting, and the location by Bellwoods, is key. All this would make for a good review if not for one little chink in the macaroon: service.
I'm glad yelp exists at the very least to allow folks to pipe up on what's beneath the surface of the establishments they encounter.
So a while ago I'm with two dear friends of mine on a cold winter day, taking a traipse along west Queen West. They get their coffee fixes early from another charming local shop, but I have yet to get something until I happen upon Nadege. I had passed by it many times and was always curious and tempted to try it out, so I go in with my friends and start ordering... A lot. I wanted to sample a variety of their offering so I ordered a sandwich, some coffee and an assortment of their little desserts. I figured why not get the full experience?
As they rang me up to a hefty (but welcome) bill of about $26 or so they spot my friends patiently waiting for me to get my stuff and continue our walk. I was planning on eating nearby at one of their places so I got it to go. At that point they demand my two friends wait outside with their coffees! Wait outside in the cold because they were drinking coffee out of nondescript white cups quietly as I ordered my food!
I gently asked the lady behind the counter to calm down and let it pass as I didn't see the problem, but she insisted they leave, quite aggressively, immediately. To my knowledge neither of my friends did anything wrong other the sit quietly at the wall stools and wait. The people at Nadege cited the reason as being the fact that they cruft in coffee from another place. Not food, not pastries: just plain old coffee. My friends were shocked, and I was outraged at the commotion Nadege made about this "crime."
As my friends started to inch awkwardly and uncomfortably toward the door I had had enough. I have my food right back to the counter and told them I would not buy anything there again.
This is the truth and a true story. Perhaps I would give them another chance if they responded well to review of this kind but, until then, I place this here as a buyer beware. Pretense is never a good thing.
