| - It is with a heavy heart that I write this negative review. Takumi used to be one of the favorite spots in Madison for my girlfriend and I to get sushi, but that changed tonight. we had a couple grievances tonight when we decided to dine there for dinner, a few of them were small issues. One of them was a major problem. I had ordered a piece of smoked salmon for a sushi appetizer and received mackerel. Not a big deal at all. They replaced the sushi with the correct one and let me eat the mackerel as well, which was very tastey. When we received a complimentary dessert, they gave us only one spoon. Also, this is a very small issue almost not worth mentioning. These two problems only serve to highlight the major red flag that occured in the middle of our stay. The thing that has made me reconsider ever returning to Takumi was this: as we sat at the sushi bar waiting for our meal, a small cockroach wandered past. Right in front of me, AT THE SUSHI BAR. I was in shock. I watched this dime - sized roach stroll past my dinner plate and into the fixture of the bar itself via a gap in the wood, right where all the fresh seafood is kept and handled. My girlfriend and I were in shock. Immediately after calling the host over to quietly complain and demand a new seat, our rolls arrived. Our hunger and disbelief got the better of us, and we stayed for our meal. However, once hunger was sated and clarity of mind returned, I started to feel angry and disgusted. The host offered us a fifty percent discount (after our server initially and "accidentally" handed us the full bill), the aforementioned comped dessert, and a promise that they were already scheduling an appointment with their pest control. I feel that because I was originally handed a full bill, something that made me quite angry, that I accepted the discount a little too easily, having been placated from the anger that I was just about to unleash. He also confided that he and other members of the staff have been trying to get the owner to remodel the sushi bar. What he left unsaid was that they are pushing for a remodel because this problem has happened before. Their general attitude towards us also hinted to the fact that it was not a surprising complaint. I was at first conflicted about exposing this information to social media, because we stayed and ate, we accepted their discount and apology, and it was once a favorite location. After thinking about it a little longer, I am still offended. We were both surprised we even stayed. I think because it was so incredibly ridiculous that something like that could happen at a supposedly upscale sushi restaurant, one that we have frequented many times, that we didn't react correctly.
