Husband and I decided to try Umiya for a lunch date before a movie. We don't live on that side of town so I googled sushi places in the zip code of the theater and Umiya came up with great reviews.
We were seated promptly after walking in however it took about 10 minutes before someone offered drinks or a menu. Once we had menus several people stopped in a 3 minute span to ask if we wanted to order.
They were prompt in getting rolls and nigiri out. As far as the nigiri it was reallllly good. They werent overly thick or large pieces. I also had a screaming O salad with tuna and it was delicious. The spicy garlic Edamame was cold and tasted like it was tossed in just sriracha with no garlic. The rolls left a little to be desired.they tasted alright. They were not very neat. What I mean is they were messy. One roll we ordered kept coming unrolled when we would use the chopstick to grab a piece. One roll had an excess of crunch on top. I'm all for crunch I really am but it went everywhere, I have never had crunch on a Japanese lasagna either. There wasn't anything special about the sauces on top (if any.) mostly just straight sriracha or eel sauce. One roll came out to us with no sauce but the description had a ponzu sauce and spicy mayo so we couldn't tell if it was even the right roll. Now I know you're thinking well did you tell someone. We tried. After several failed attempts we just ate it. One thing I really liked was they offer macarons! My husband loves mochi, I do not so when I saw chocolate macorons I was pretty excited and they were good! Another odd thing was our table was not level. It kept wobbling back and forth which is slightly irritating while eating.
Recap: nigiri was great (salmon, tuna, yellow tail and red snapper) the rolls were meh but they weren't awful. The wobbling table was irritating and it seemed either every waiter showed up in 2 minutes to ask if you wanted to order or they disappeared for 10 minutes all together.
