| - This review is for the Tuesday Night Trivia experience.
I've been to this event about 20 times now, and lately the experience has gone downhill exponentially. Two weeks ago, we had a group of 7 people. Everyone knows that you need a sacrificial lamb or two to go early (around 6 - 6:30) to get a table so that you're set by the time everyone arrives for trivia at 8pm. (Or later, if your friends are anything like mine) Well I was the lamb, as usual, and though there were 3 of us by the time 7pm rolled around, we were still admonished by our British waiter that we can't hold a table for 6-8 people if we only have 3 people. I told him, "We will have 6 or 7." He continued on about how it wasn't right, so I said, "What about that guy over there, he's only got one person!" The waiter replied, "Well he will have more people come later." Yeah, I told him, SO WILL WE. So annoying. (Spoiler alert: by the end of the night, we had 7 people, and the other dude only had one other person join him. SMH.) If only admonishing us was the last of the shitty service, but alas, it wasn't. We were treated poorly for not ordering enough alcohol, daring to ask for refills of coffee or water, and for the audacity to ask for separate checks. No one thing was that egregious (other than the unnecessary scolding) but the cumulative effect was almost enough to make me never want to return. Yet return I did the following week, but I asked to sit in another section.
Last week seemed so much more promising. I sat on the other side, asked for a table for 5 and commenced waiting for the rest of my party..... they were all especially late, much to my waitress' chagrin. And, unbeknownst to me (and the McMullan's staff), the entire room I was in began to fill up due to an impromptu memorial for some dead guy. I began to get nervous because all these people were filling up a room beyond capacity and leaving no room for my teammates (when they finally did arrive). One mourner saw my distress and assured me they would be leaving before trivia. I didn't believe him, though, because some of his other compatriots were just ordering food and it was nearly 7:45pm. Sure enough, by the time trivia started, I couldn't hear a word they said over the loud speaker, and none of the mourners were upset enough to keep quiet despite multiple people yelling, "SHHHHH!!!!" Some people playing trivia up and left, so my party moved over to their table where it was just slightly quieter. I was beyond disgruntled (especially because our order of Irish Nachos still hadn't come out of the kitchen 45 minutes later). By the end of the night, we heard most of the questions, but ended up in 11th place. If we were in contention, I would have been livid because the mourners had formed their own team of 17 people (though 8 is the max), and they won first place, despite having cell phones out and running between rooms sharing answers with other people. It's hard to take a bar trivia seriously when everyone talks and cheats. What's the point? It surely isn't fun because it was anything but.... McMullan's should really police room capacity and trivia cheating. Until then, I won't be returning.
