| - In the heart of the plateau, it's hard to find places of character. From the modern wooden rustic interior amply described by other reviewers, to the beautifully tattooed waitresses, la Taverne screams character. A simple but perhaps too crowded terrace, overlooking Mont-Royal (perfect for people watching), I was in.
We had planned to only grab beers (decent selection) but ended up ordering the braised pork cheek poutine. What a dish. The pork was tender, and shredded easily with the fork and mixed with the curds and fresh cut fries. The gravy, homemade, had notes of beer and was quite sweet, which the waitress attributed to the chef's Lac St Jean's origins. If you like your poutine salty and all about the cheese, this one won't be for you. But we liked it.
All in all, a nice spot in Montreal's busiest French corner of Mont-Royal and St-Denis. And although we haven't had more than one dish, I wouldn't hesitate stopping by again.
