| - I always come to Forequarter excited and sometimes leave extremely satisfied while other times underwhelmed.
Forequarter offers patrons American style food complimented by European influences made with many locally sourced options. The atmosphere is small and cozy. Sometimes it can be a bit too cozy and, unfortunately, overbearingly loud if one large party shows up.
On every visit, we order the fried mushrooms with the black garlic truffle. Usually, this is one of the highlights of the visit. The mushrooms come out fried with unmatched texture and contains a blend of tasty shiitakes, oysters, and others. Last time we went, we ordered this and it turns out Forequarter didnt receive the mushrooms that are usually put in the dish. Additionally, our mushrooms were undercooked. We tried to politely inform our waiter that the mushrooms were not right, but he just didn't get the hint.
Other than a few base options, the menu does rotate, and the online menu should be take only as an example of the type of flavors you will get here. An example of one of my favorites dishes was a rainbow trout that was stuffed with leeks. The flavor was unmatched and really everything tasted fresh - one of the times that I would identify this place as a hit. Other times, however, I've ordered main dishes that have come out cold or underseasoned - bah humbug.
Forequarter is a great restaurant with a great concept. After a number of visits, however, and an accumulation of paper cut magnitude negative experiences, I would say my experience here overall is slightly above average in comparison to similar options in Madison.
