| - Years ago this might have been a four-star venue (never five, as the prices are ridiculous and I've always thought charging extra for a normal movie time as an "amenity" was the most cash-grabby thing I'd ever heard), but they've fallen behind and have lost their identity as a cool indie/art cinema.
Sundance has a nice design, better fare than your typical concession stand, is immaculate with well-kept bathrooms, and a comfortable lounge area. Aesthetically, they're on point. The staff has always been friendly and helpful when I've had a question.
Sundance used to be the only place in town where you could pick your seat when purchasing tickets, but now that applies to all the major theaters. The seats at Sundance are nicer than older models, but they don't compare to the new recliners that have taken over across town. They don't have competitive discount deals, and at this point their roster is nearly identical to the mainstream theaters. Every now and then they'll have a unique lineup, but it seems like more often than not I can catch the same films elsewhere for less than half the price.
Robert Redford recently sold the enterprise to a major theater group, so maybe that accounts for the identity crisis. It's a nice place that I've been to many times, and I'm sure I'll be there many more, but if given the opportunity between Sundance and a more affordable, comfortable pick, I'll probably choose the latter.
