  • They've made a lot of sad changes to what used to be the Phoenix zoo. The new signs and new train depots are not in keeping with the more relaxed, rustic style of the zoo itself but that's the least of it. Prices are up too high. Some of the animals exhibits are very sad. The public is allowed to walk right through some animal enclosures. Imagine if the house where you live is open to the public 7 days a week. Lines of people stroll through your home. I can't imagine the stress this must cause the animals. I've seen the prairie dog mistreated. A grown man kept tossing pebbles in it's enclosure, which you can't walk through but it is a low-walled enclosure with no roof. Like a little fenced yard. The little prairie dog thought each pebble that was tossed in his "yard" might be a treat. Only to find a rock each time. The fool who was doing this was free to keep on teasing the prairie dog, because anyone can throw anything they want into it's enclosure. No one monitors what goes on. Why not ? They need to protect the animals from idiots. You used to be able to get off when the zoo train stopped at various points along the journey through the zoo. Which made it interesting and it also definitely helped people who might be too old or ill to do much walking further into the zoo. If you can get off the train at various stops that means you didn't have to walk all that way to get there. But now everyone else is forced to stay on the train. Why ? I've been going to the Phoenix zoo since I was in grade school, there was never any horrible problem associated with letting people decide if they wanted off the train or not. Aside from being convenient, being able to just get off at various stops made it more interesting than being a captive for the entire ride. And now you have to pay to ride this train that you're "not allowed" to get off of. The zoo is hitting people up for extra expenses any way they can. The train used to be free. The manta rays experience day after day of crowds people constantly touching them when they're on exhibit. It's cruel. And many of the animal pens or enclosures are obviously way too small. During "zoo lights" they blast the music, imagine what that does to the birds and animals. Does anyone care ? Used to be a nice, chilled out zoo but now it's being run in an uptight, overly expensive and exploitive way.
