  • I came by last week. I've been going to the America's Best in West County in St. Louis for as long as I can remember so, I was happy to see them open a location in Champaign. The appointment was friendly and quick but when it came time to pick out glasses, one of the employees was one of those "overly helpful" types. I'm the kind of person that likes to be left alone to think about what I'm going to buy. If I have questions, I don't mind asking someone for help. This guy must have come up to me every five or ten minutes to ask if I had questions. Sometimes it was helpful, a lot of times, I felt like he was pressuring me to make a decision. In the end, I will say that the glasses are not much cheaper than other more expensive places. I ended up paying $400 for two pairs of glasses which is pretty comparable to an "expensive" place like lens crafters and at least there you can have your glasses ready the same day! Sure, they advertise the two pair for $69 deal but it only applies to certain glasses and the really "helpful" employee was not so helpful when it came to helping me find the best deal. He kept making comments about the more expensive frames being more durable. They must get paid on commission or something. Also, the price doesn't include lenses and I'm not sure how much that costs, my lenses are pretty basic, no astigmatism or anything.....so I'm not sure how it ended up costing so much but in the end, I was sick of being there and just wanted to leave with a decision. I figured $200/per pair of glasses isn't too bad after all.... I also bought contacts. They say the prices start at $13.99/box but they're more like $20 a box unless you pay $99 to join the Eyecare Club or buy a year supply or something. This place has lots of confusing gimmicks, just tell me the real price! UPDATE: 2 weeks later.... So, I finally picked up my glasses. I'm happy with the frames and the woman who adjusted them for me. This is the only reason why I haven't switched to online stores. Getting my frames adjusted to fit my face is important to me. The only thing I'm not happy with is my actual prescription. Its definitely different than my old one and I don't think I like it. My prescription hasn't changed in over 10 years so, I was a little surprised when she had said she changed it. Now it's harder to read things that are close up. I don't think the eye doctor did a thorough enough job double checking this.
