  • I have now been to Red Square twice. My interest in the place is because my parents both immigrated from the Soviet Union so I am very familiar with Russian food and I thought coming here would be a familiar and comforting experience. However, the food is very Americanized and I think I now understand how a Chinese person feels going to Chinese restaurants in the US. You want to order what you're familiar with eating at home but it's all American food with small traces of the food you know. They use ingredients used in Russian cooking such as dill, buckwheat, potatoes, salmon, etc. but it's really not at all what I would expect. As an example, their Heritage Charcuterie on the menu states it's "recipes passed down from generation to generation" and imagine my surprise when it was all Italian meats such as salami and prosciutto. I imagined a family recipe pate and delicious imported meats from Eastern Europe but that's not at all what came out. Furthermore, the prices are crazy! Even after I accepted the fact that this is just a gimicky restaurant, the quality of food didn't justify the prices charged. I love fine dining but I also don't like overpaying for something that is average. My husband ordered the filet and lobster special and he said he could have gotten better filet at the supermarket. Finally, their vodka list is embarrassing based on the fact that that's their whole thing. They advertise their vodka cellar tasting experience but none of the vodkas on the list were anything I couldn't get at a liquor store. I was hoping they'd have my favorite Ukrainian vodka that I go out of my way to my local Russian store to get but they just had a limited list of Russian and Polish vodkas that are pretty mainstream at this point in time. I don't know how they feel they can advertise their vodkas when they don't even carry anything special that would make it worth a vodka connoisseur going out of their way to come here. Overall, the service was attentive and the atmosphere was nice and relaxing but the food and drinks is nothing to write home about.
