This is an excellent venue for symphony concerts. I came here for the Pittsburgh Symphony on a Sunday afternoon.
It's easy to get here on the T line, with the Wood Street Station just across the street. The interior is very ornate and exquisite and nice to walk around during breaks in the program.
The theater is pretty large for a Symphony Hall, but I found the acoustics excellent at my seat in the fourth row of the orchestra section. I don't know what the sound would be like if you're further away. It's not the type of Symphony Hall with seats surrounding the stage--instead it's more like theater seating with the stage in front and seats behind.
The Pittsburgh Symphony is one of the top
flight symphonies and well worth a visit. In this concert what was unusual was that the conductor gave a 10 minute talk before the Shostakovich Symphony giving his interpretation of the work. I don't know if they do this frequently and I don't usually like this type of thing in a concert, but I found his comments illuminating and interesting.
This is definitely a place you must visit in Pittsburgh if you're into cultural activities.
