| - If you dig the silver ball, you probably already know about the amazingly fun Pinball Hall of Fame. No disrespect to the PHOF, but while there might be 50 times more machines there, it is about 50 times more fun to play here.
First of all the machine selection here, while small, is outstanding and the machines are all in excellent shape. Some hip machines from the sexy 1960's. Some more recent, relatively rare machines, e.g., Star Trek.
Second, all the machines are on Free Play. For a $10 membership fee you can play all the machines to your heart's content. You can buy a yearly membership for $100. The membership fees not only pay for machine upkeep, they also help keep the crowds away. LOL.
But the coolest thing is when they turn the overhead florescent lights out. I was surprised how much of a difference it made. The machines are transformed in the semi-darkness. The colors on the vintage machines glow warmer, the cartoonish graphics seem more alive. The modern pinball machines actually seem to be designed to be played in a low-light environment. You might be surprised how much of the fun you've been missing with the lights on.
In addition to the great pinball machines, Flipperspiel also has some old school video games, like Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Dig-Dug, Galaga and Centipede.
This place is so much damn fun! It really is a club, a cool hang out for people that love pinball. The underground description fits because it is not particularly easy to find. My GPS led me to a place a couple buildings away.
There's a small group of regulars who know each other, but they are very welcoming to first timers.
Sean showed me around the place and introduced me to everyone. He explained that everyone pitches in and does everything. No one is in charge, per se. There isn't any need.
It's an adolescent anarchist's wet dream. Well, this one's, anyway. Everybody is busy playing pinball, or talking about pinball, or watching pinball.
There is a refrigerator stocked with random soft drinks. The fridge is on the Honor System, drinks cost $1. Like everywhere in Las Vegas, there's a slot to put your money in.
This year I'm doing a Reverse Yelp 100 Review Challenge. I'm going to continue to write new reviews, as usual. But my goal is to delete 100 of my reviews before the end of the year. This might be the first one I delete. This place is too freaking cool, I like how almost no one knows about it.
