  • My wife and I made reservations almost a month in advance after doing some extensive research. I was in Pittsburgh on business a few weeks ago and it happened to coincide with my birthday weekend so she joined me for a couple of days. The ambiance is fantastic, modern and sophisticated and its location offers views that are hard to match. We started the night with the Roasted Butternut and Beets Salad. Because it was not really in season it did not have butternut squash but it was still a great, earthy and sweet salad. My wife followed with the Two MB Signature Crab Cakes which were perfectly seasoned and had great texture, something that many restaurants struggle with. I had the Chimichurri Chilean Sea Bass and being from Argentina I must confess that I am very particular as to what carries the "chimichurri" label. That said, I am excited to report that it held true to its roots. The outside was firm, almost crispy while the meat remained soft, moist and flaky. A little salt and not much else was used to prevent the combination of the chimichurri and other spices from overpowering this sweet and delicate fish. I added two Seared Jumbo Sea Scallops and they were expertly prepared and accompanied by a lemon wedge wrapped in fine cloth.The presentation of such a simple dish was perfect. As a side we shared the the Fried Brussel Sprouts which were cooked with bacon and a balsamic reduction that complemented them very well. I was, at first, a bit worried about the wine list as I didn't see anything I would consider a high end wine, by the glass. I was pleasantly surprised, however, after trying a Malbec from WA (again, being from Argentina I am a bit of a snub when it comes to this wine) that left me wanting more and so I enjoyed a second glass. Try the Waterbrook Malbec if you like a medium body wine that pairs great with almost everything. For desert we were served a complimentary Creme Brûlée that was delicious. We decided to take it back to the hotel for a midnight snack. If you find yourself in Pittsburgh and want to enjoy more than just a great meal, Monterrey Fish Grotto should earn a spot on your short list. Chin Chin!
