| - Well, first thing is first - I agree, pretty pricey, for the original price that this high tea was for I am not sure I would agree (there was a ritz cracker and pringle chip in there - though tastey and unique, the cost would call for more hand made from scratches - possibly).
I did get the High Tea Groupon though. That was pretty good.
I have gone to many a high tea place all over the city and I would say this is worth a try (as a groupon, more for the cost).
Lets admit it, high tea appears time consuming to make (not if you make it in bulk for the day) all those varieties of pastries and savories and to make sure the scones are not too dry or not too pre-made. But the cost of some in the city is a bit much in comparison to a good hearty meal, so you really have to like the whole ambiance of High Tea and all.
This place is pretty and decorative. I'm not a fan of the blue but it stands out and is great against gold decor. Some of the wording on the walls can be a bit clearer in explanation as well.
Here, my friend had the dominican blend tea - which was pretty tasty! Though when she asked for more water (as they had the loose leaf bag in the pot) it tasted pretty watered down at that second steep. (somehow I dont think they are a fan here of topping up your tea with hot water). My tea on the other had was steeped previously as there were no loose leaves nor bag in my pot at all - so to add extra hot water would not do a thing for extending my tea. With all the pastries etc it would have been nice to top up the tea (as the pots are small) or get a glass of water.
What I really liked about this place was the savories. I find that most High tea places have bland savories, not much thought into the taste of the tiny morsel you get :ie. scrambled egg sandwich tastes like plain scrambled egg, plain bread - but not here! there was a bit of a curry type spice with it which made for that extra punch in that tiny bite sandwich! That is how a canape should be. The beef and wasabi had a punch but a bit too much wasabi that over whelmed the beef but the idea of it was good. There was a chicken and tuna and bacon canape as well - all very tastey bites - not plain at all - so of all the places I have been these were the tastiest canapes for high tea.
The scones were ok. Not the best I've had and kinda crumbly and dry. No clotted cream. The top tier pastries were good - the attention to detail in the bear like coffee mouse was cute and flavorful. The macarons were chewy inside and filled with real flavor (not just a sugar taste).
This all came with extra short bread cookies, a jello desert and a plate of icecream topped waffles. The waffles part I did not understand too much because that is just another desert in itself. There were a lot of sweets already so a savory would have been welcome, or something more refreshing to wash it all down.
They brought the waffles with icecream out with the tier so by the time we got to it the icecream had pretty much melted.
The stains on the blue cushion seats should be cleaned up a bit just to maintain the pretty decor. All in all it is a place to try if you havent. Everything is pretty decent and a nice ambiance. I would recommend to try a groupon here, not sure I would go back.
