| - The TLDR version is that this place was angling for a 4-star review at 8:30 PM and was down to a 3-star, maybe a 2.5-star if that was an option, by the time we left at 1 AM. Good food, okay drinks, subpar service.
Location: Easy to find in a quiet neighborhood, 1-minute walk from the St. George TTC station.
Food: An interesting menu selection. In addition to typical British fare (fish & chips, bangers & mash), they also have tacos, some Asian food, a semi-random collection of burgers and sandwiches, and assorted appetizers. Prices are typical for a pub like this; expect $13-$19 per person. To be honest, the food was excellent. I got the full portion of the fish and chips, and that is a big fish! That being said, it was only once piece of haddock. I am not a fish & chips connoisseur but I will do my best to critique it. The batter is light but holds up when pierced. I think one of the problems that I had was that if you cut it with a fork or a butter knife, the batter tended to separate from the fish itself. I don't really care what form makes it into my mouth, but this can understandably be frustrating to have your fish sliding out of the fried encasing. The cole slaw is good too; it's fairly light on the palate and good as a stand-alone item, although you can put it on the fish for an interesting textural contrast. The tartar sauce was nothing to write home about. Fries are fries. The Yorkshire pudding was quite good, but I would eat it first before it gets cold and probably a bit chewy.
Drinks: If you are getting something that is not a craft beer or an in-house special, it will cost more than at an average bar. So if you were going out just to grab some drinks, you would probably want to go somewhere else in Toronto. The selection is good, particularly of the local Ontario stuff.
Service: Okay, this is where things go downhill. We had a reservation for about a dozen, most of whom filtered in and out over the course of the first few hours. I get it at the start that you kind of back off as a server to let people socialize and stuff, and it's not an issue that we had to flag our guy down to order food. But this joint could have made at least twice as much money if they were more attentive to asking for more drinks and stuff after we ordered food (also to be noted, we were never checked on to see how our food was doing). Additionally, the service after we did order more drinks kept getting worse as the night went on; by the last round at about 12:30 when there was practically no one else there, it still took 15 minutes for the drinks to show up. I can accept higher food and beer prices for a polished establishment, but the service has to be polished too, not just the tables.
P.S. As a redeeming Pokemon bonus, you can hit at least one gym, sometimes two if you're glitching around a little bit, and one PokeStop from the joint. Spawn rates not too good though.
