Best single place for lunch in Madison. I've eaten here at least 50 times over the years and it's always consistent and affordable.
Spinach stew has about two strands of spinach--it's mostly potatoes--but it's hearty, healthy, and good. Koftachalow (meatballs) are enormous, and easily enough beef to feed two, for only about $8. Burani (eggplant) is rich, oily, and very tasty with their bread. Bulani (fried dough with meat or potato) is a decadent appetizer to rival anything on state street, for only around $5.
Kabobs are also a winner, with large portions. The seafood kabob is tasty and low calorie if you don't overuse the yogurt sauce it comes with. Lamb kabob is classic and goes very nicely with the rice and side sauces on the table.
Food comes with a heavy bean/lamb soup or a salad. They also have great tea.
Prices are great, but service reflects the cost. If you're in a rush you're better off at the Med Cafe a few doors down, but for a nice hour-long student-budget lunch with a slightly disorganized staff this is your spot near campus.
