| - My Excalibur hotel and casino experience was much better than I was expecting after reading some other Yelp reviews. I was forced to stay here as it was one of the three "conference hotels" for the conference I was in town for this week, but I had registered so late that both the higher end options - Mandalay Bay and Luxor - were sold out.
I've been in corporate America long enough to not mess with the way things are "done" - staying elsewhere and justifying it was more work than I was prepared to undertake. But it would not be a stretch to say that I was dreading my Excalibur stay more than anything else during my trip to Las Vegas this week, thanks to the aforementioned less than rosy Yelp reviews.
My stay was full of pluses and minuses, which makes this a solid three star review.
--- Check in took over thirty minutes (minus), but the person checking me in (Cindy K.) was extremely warm and friendly (plus).
--- Cindy put me in a Royal Tower ground floor room with a king bed. The room was super close to the casino floor and fast to get to (plus) but smelled of smoke from the casino floor (minus).
--- My room was spacious, comfortable, and had a working safe (plus) but the carpet was a bit worn (like in the rest of the hotel) and two of the six dresser drawers didn't open (minus).
--- Food options at the hotel were mostly limited to chains (minus), but it is a quick walk away from the excellent food choices near the New York New York casino and hotel (plus).
--- They charged me a $10 per day resort fee for "internet, gym access and printing of boarding passes" (minus) but the internet was good and the gym was well equipped.
Some things I didn't like:
* There is a lot of pushing of shows and other services.
* There are hookers plying their trade out in the open - I especially noticed this on Friday evening.
* They charge an additional $10 per day fee to use the men's locker room and sauna at the gym!
--- Some things I liked:
* There is a tram to the Mandalay Bay (where my conference was).
* The poker room is small and ideal for beginners like me. They offer free classes every day at noon, which gave me enough confidence to play a bit of 2-6 limit hold em later that night.
* The service in general is very good. Everyone I asked for help was courteous and useful.
Will I stay at the Excalibur again? With so many options in Las Vegas, who knows? But it wasn't as bad as I expected, and I will most probably be back to play some more poker!
