| - This spot was a Second Cup. I don't ever recall a Second Cup closing, so I find it interesting that a CDN west coast coffee joint would set up shop at this location. I would be interested to find out why they chose this spot.
I am honestly not sure if this locale will stand the test of time. I think Mountain Bean's first Ontario location (they have 2 other locations - Manitoba and BC) should have been in Collingwood or something. Say up at Blue Mountain - I think it would do great up there, actually.
This is not a city cafe. In fact, it is the exact opposite. You walk in, you smell a lot of wood and you feel like you are in a cabin. You turn around and look out the window and see you are still at Eglinton and Bayview but feel transported up north.
I hate to stereotype, but this place has moose mugs and other rugged, outdoors, traditional male tones. I am wondering if it is because Mountain Bean is owned by former NHL goalie, Trevor Kidd.
There is a lot of pine in here with some high lacquer finish going on. There is also a huge flat screen TV in the back (was not on during my visit).
To test out the quality, I ordered a regular coffee. I wanted to see what they had "on tap". On a positive note, the coffee is organic - a strong point in my books. The sizing is HUGE! I ordered a medium, it is easily equivalent to a Tim Hortons or Second Cup large. At $1.99, the price point puts it between Tim Hortons and Second Cup.
I chose a mild house blend. It was okay. I mean, it wasn't great, wasn't horrible - just okay. I did get take out because I just can't imagine sitting in this place. I guess I truly am a city girl.
Maybe I will be wrong about this place. Perhaps it will be the outdoor oasis for local families, wanting a bit of the cottage life in their cafe.
Regardless, I am interested to see what is going to happen to this spot over the coming months. I might go back and try their bold, just to see what the difference is. But, the decor/style of the joint is just not my cup of joe, so I will be getting take out.
