  • I had a coupon, I believe it was for a first time customer? I think it was for a $15 cut and style. The stylist and the staff were really friendly. It had been a long time I had a haircut and the stylist took the time to have a nice consultation with me and learn about my typical styling routine and what products I use. While my hair was being cut another stylist came over and asked if I would like a hand massage, gratis. She used an amazing lotion and it was super relaxing and really added to the experience. While cutting my hair, the stylist commented that I really needed either a root touch up or a whole head coloring if I was interested in a new color. At this point the conversation was pleasant, but it was changing slightly to "salesperson/upsell" mode. I was on a super tight budget and declined. Being a kind of expensive salon I guessed it would probably be upwards of $100. When we were done, the stylist filled out a little card for me that detailed what she did and what products she used on my hair. She also gave instructions for how much product to use; she remarked that when using professional hair care products it is important to use a small amount. She mentioned that the salon had a sheet of coupons and I could get discounts on both the shampoo and conditioner. She again said that because these are professional products that require significantly less product, it would end up probably being about as much (per shampoo) that I was currently getting w/ my existing product. At this point I felt pressured, albeit in a friendly way, to buy the shampoo and conditioner so I agreed. The guy at the register was really nice, turns out that "complimentary" hand massage would have cost me without that coupon on the sheet of paper. He spent at least a minute or two adding charges, then deducting coupons, sometimes using two coupons for a single item. He said, "You're going to save a ton of money!" I felt like I hit the jackpot until he gave me the total for my $15 haircut, free hand massage and shampoo & conditioner: $75. I don't know about you but $60 for a shampoo and conditioner is high. But again, I felt pressured to buy this stuff and I gave him my charge card. Was the shampoo and conditioner good? Yes. Could I tell a big difference between that and the $4 bottles of Pantene I usually buy? Not really. I hate when places puts customers in a position where you as the customer really feels bombarded by the upselling. I will tell you that the stylists are very well trained at Philip Pelusi to upsell and did not come away with a great feeling. I would go back for a haircut, I got a great cut but the thought of continually having to say no throughout the process makes me think twice.
