| - The California Hotel was a good hotel for my first trip to Las Vegas. It had clean rooms, nice restaurants, and a decent casino. Its walking distance to Fremont Street (1 block) and the Mob Museum (2 blocks). I drove down from the SF Bay Area and hit the LV commute traffic at 530pm. The Cal Hotel is right near the freeway offramp and easy to find near Main Street Station. As a first time hotel guest, I didn't see a special parking area to drop your luggage and check-in. When you pull in, its 2 Valet lanes and 1 self parking lane. There's no doorman or attendant to ask. So I parked on the 3rd level and walked to the front desk. They told me a Bell Man will help with my luggage.
Got a room of the 6th floor facing Fremont street. Didn't know that was an issue until 2AM. Yes, I was tired after a 9 hour drive. Didn't know the Fremont Street Experience had live music until 2AM on a Thursday night. I guess I should be in the casino or restaurant at 2am, not trying to sleep. Fremont St is a block away.....and when you're there and the band is playing, its really loud. Also, the room's AC unit is loud......so use a low setting or turn it off.
The room was nice, but the bathroom's shower room was very cramp. The toilet and glass shower is in a small space. If you want to close the door, there's barely room to turn around. I have heard you don't have this problem in the new tower.
Food in the Market Square Cafe is good. I liked the breakfast buffet. The Hawaiian Short Ribs were excellent. The $9.99 Prime Rib was OK.
WiFi for a guest is $9.99/ night. For my smartphone, it wasn't needed. I have Xfinity Mobile, and no problem with service.
In general, I had a nice time at the Cal Hotel and Casino.
