| - I live close to this location, and so a few times I've stopped in to pick up a car-related resource or to get work done; I've experienced every level of the Pep Boys services, and to tell you to run far away in the other direction doesn't begin to describe the headache you'll endure coming in to this shop. Very friendly service people juxtaposed against incompetent representatives on the floor and tied to disgustingly half-assed work. Take your car to Zovko's in the South Side for maintenance/work, and take your car to Duke's in the South Side for tires. And if you care, read below for a more in-depth list of upsetting moments in chronological order:
1. Needed new tires. Went to Pep Boy's for a tire offer. Great tires, nice price. Quick installation, got my car back with smiles on both sides of the transaction. Driving across the state, my hub cap blows clean off on the turnpike. Check my tires, the lug nuts are all loose. Pep Boy's didn't tighten the lug nuts. Fortunately, they reached out apologetically, replaced the hub cap, and checked out their work. Nice enough.
2. Needed some rust remover and touch-up paint. Looked for what I wanted, but was confused at the large amount of options available. Waited about fifteen minutes in line to ask an employee, who asked me to wait to check out the three people behind me before walking over and giving me his recommendations. After looking up my car make/model/color, he gave me a can of rust remover and some paint to go with it. Turns out, it was the wrong color. I brought it back after it dried and he apologized, continuing to say that he really wasn't sure and I shouldn't have asked. I asked if they could take it off and he said that they don't strip paint, sorry.
3. Woke up to a vandalized car. Needed some graffiti remover, wax polish, and some microfiber rags. Walked in to find a similar issue--there are so many different options and I wasn't sure which to buy. Asked for help. An employee said he had no idea, he just works here and isn't very good with cars/never really did any of this. A veteran employee then helped him get the graffiti remover, wax polish. I asked which microfiber rag I should get, and he said, "I dont know, grab any of them."
4. Tire popped, needed replacement. Took my car in, bought a new tire, was in and out in a few hours. Great, fast service, all smiles. I asked what was wrong with the tire, they said they didn't know and would have to go back and ask but it might take a while. As I drove off, there was a nasty scratching sound (like steel hitting pavement). Took my car back in, turns out the piece where you attach the wheel was bent and it was hitting the frame of the car. They fixed it--for the next two weeks, I drove my car around and still heard the occasional "whump whump whump." Took it in to Zovko's, they took it apart and said that it wasn't fixed. There was a piece of metal hitting my brake rotor. Zovko's fixed it.
I don't trust Pep Boy's. I don't trust the service workers, I don't trust the employees, and I don't trust the establishment. I don't want a frequent customer rewards card, I want a quality person to see me through start to finish that knows what they're talking about and is proud of their work. I will never go back to Pep Boy's, even if it is right around the corner from me. You should never go to this Pep Boy's. They will only steer you into a ditch.
