  • It was my 2nd visit yesterday for their "Backroads & Blooms" Spring weekend. My 1st was their previous Christmas' "Over the Rooftop" in November. They recently expanded and opened their 2nd warehouse on the same property/location for larger/more items. The main warehouse is the original store that's a bit smaller and for smaller items. Just so you know this business retail opens every 3rd big weekend (Thurs - Sun) with a seasonal/holiday theme; if you go around Christmastime, you will find lots of Christmas items, if you go around fall, you will find Autumn items. I bet they set it up that way to make it like they have neat hard-to-find stuff and create a frenzy to attract buyers in order to sell well. They primarily sell authentic vintage (& some modern) 'throwaways' and is perfect if you like old items you can fix up and decorate your home, or if you have a fondness for vintage collectible that reminds you of your late grandmother whom you miss dearly (as well as some modern find you apparently don't see elsewhere). This is not the place to score a bargain but to find a treasure. Each booth belongs to an independent vendor (who's traditionally not present) who takes a cut from the retail each time an item sold, like many other salvage-type businesses that rents out a space for vendors to tell their wares. The ambiance was mellow albeit a bit crowded at times (mainly the over-abundance of those items of all sizes & shapes taking up space and weaving around them) and browsers/shoppers walked around calmly searching vainly. I was there on Thursday late afternoon since they close @ 9 and it was not that crowded and also easier to find parking on the property. There was seemingly a targeted demographic- the folks there looked pretty good and some even dressed up. It's just simply a den-like place to walk around and see what you could find and hopefully 'score' what you had in mind. The staff was friendly. The 2 ladies at the checkout I had from my 2 visits acted like they liked their jobs there and were helpful, despite the fact they'd have to patiently scribble down the vendor # and price on each sale(!) The rest of the staff looked out for you if you needed help searching for something and helped you with heavy items to take down or take to your car, and some even kept the place up by dusting or picking up debris (it's like they knew people were taking pictures and wouldn't want ugly stuff captured and posted online (wink)). Their location at the heart of the antiques district (besides the likes of downtown historic Glendale and a block in Mesa- both that still exist) on 7th Ave between Camelback & Indian School elevates their convenience and sales volume. The pricing is a bit high for some items just because they are 'vintage-like' (however, many items are of decent quality, so that's understandable) and also their tiny parking lot (there's a side street though which would've been difficult if you're hauling a heavy item) caused me to knock off 1 star rating. They do check their items to be sure they worked or are not broken and even clean some. I didn't see any broken or gross items- only exception is some dirty/dusty outdoor items, of course). I purchased a few true vintage Christmas items (i.e. cookie cutters & Shiny Brite tree topper) and Easter (i.e. small glazed ceramic basket). I may go back again someday just to look at what (quality) Christmas items that may have again- for me to decorate my lovely home furthermore. See you back there...
