| - We decided to head to a place in Carnegie for brunch one Sunday and since we were close we made the trek to the South Hills to visit Mindful and cross another brewery off our list. Right away some positives to note, they have an ample private parking lot, and a large space to accommodate big crowds. They also have an upstairs that we didn't journey to, and I noticed a picture of what appears to be a rooftop bar or lounge area but I'd be amiss if I said there was much of a view beyond traffic. However, drinking in the sun is always a nice option.
The day we visited was far from sunny. It was bitter cold out. We sat at a table inside their bar area on the first level. I had to keep my coat on for most of our visit even though they have double doors because every time they were opened you were blasted with a winter chill. I kind of wished we would have tried for upstairs but this gal was on crutches so you get the deal.
Perusing the menu I noticed that they offer a lot of drinking options. Many coolers full of different beers, wine, mixed drinks, mixed drinks on tap, competitors brews on tap, then there are the Mindful Brewery selection. Of all the things on tap they only had about 15 of their own beers. I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but I like to go to breweries to try and hopefully enjoy their beer. The one's they brewed. At their brewery. That I made a special trip to visit. Not someone else's that I could get at the local bar. I am not opposed to offering other selections, especially wine and some cocktails as I know not everyone likes beer and they also serve food, I just wish this place celebrated their brand more. MHO.
Anyhow, they don't offer samples but will sell 5 ounce pours so you can build your own flight kind of. I first tried the Tropinaut IPA. It was ok, I wasn't enthralled with my first selection. My husband who was trying several types via the 5 OZ pours let me try his Pale Ale Drop Bear. Now this was more my style. Though one should be warned it boasts a 10% ABV. We stayed for one more and enjoyed the atmosphere which was lively due to the AFC Championship game playing on all their nice sized televisions above the bar.
I liked this brewery but wouldn't go out of my way to come back. Seems a little commercial maybe even chain-like for me and lacks the charm of independent breweries in the area. If we did stop back I think I would like to try upstairs and maybe something off the menu since that looked pretty good.
