| - I was in for a cervical spine MRI today and I couldn't be more pleased with the treatment I received at this facility. After getting a call from my physician's office that they were sending the referral to Steinberg, I called to make an appointment. I was placed on hold for only a minute, then scheduled for the MRI 15 days later. This was entirely acceptable as it was not urgent. During the intake interview over the phone, the scheduler made a point to ask if I was claustrophobic (I am) and gave me the instructions to make sure I had someone with me to drive me home. Knowing that this was going to be accommodated made me much less apprehensive to come in.
Today, as I was greeted at the check-in, the front desk nurse was well-organized and well-prepared, having pre-printed authorization forms with my insurance and contact information already filled out and only needing confirmation. I think it's the only time in the history of my several dozen medical office/procedure/imaging appointments where I didn't have to fill out dozens of sheets for the billing department.
After verifying my information, it was only another five minutes before another nurse took me back to the MRI changing and waiting room. The waiting rooms are clean, comfortable, and all feature flat screen televisions at a comfortable volume. She was very nice and gave me two fresh hospital gowns (to cover your front and back) that were even in better than condition than any hospital I've been admitted to, with a locker available to secure my belongings. There were two concise medical history forms to complete, and two consent forms to sign. I sat in the inner waiting area with two other patients (also in double gowns) for less than 10 minutes before yet another nurse called me into a more private room to discuss and administer sedation. She went over my medical forms, confirmed what was on them, asked what medication I had already taken today and at what time, and explained what medication was going to be given to me. As I had to chew two tablets (that tasted awful, but I suppose that's so they don't taste like candy, right?) she even gave me a cup of water to wash away the gross aftertaste. I watched HGTV for a little while in order for the medication to begin working, and then the MRI technician came to meet me, go over my chart, and ask if I was ready. I didn't feel rushed, and I didn't feel belittled for my anxiety (I know it sounds silly, but I can't help it... for some reason I can't breathe in that small space!). I really, really appreciated that.
Then we went back to a corner MRI suite - the tech told me it was new - and double checked I had no metal or other belongings with me that shouldn't be there. She again confirmed my medical and surgical history, and led me to the machine. The room was a comfortable temperature. After helping me onto the table, she asked what kind of music I'd like to listen to in my headphones (they can tune to your favorite radio station, although the tech joked she sure wished they had Pandora) and assured me that I could communicate with her at any time, that she'd give me updates throughout the scan, and even offered a towel to cover my eyes, which I have to say helped me SO much!!! I wish I'd caught her name (maybe I just can't remember because of the sedative) because she deserves commendation. She was encouraging, compassionate, and informative. I am really thankful for her.
After the scan I was helped off the table and given instructions to dress so I could leave. They again made sure I had someone to drive me home - to be sure, I was in no state to drive! - and gave me instructions as to how to pick up the results of my imaging next week.
The gist is this: I've had spine problems for years, and I've been told I have several more spine surgeries down the road. But knowing that Steinberg handles the required imaging so compassionately and competently alleviates the stress of my situation greatly. I hope to stick with them through all of it.
