| - I've been attending a convention-y type thing a few blocks from this hotel for... 6 years now, I think. The first year, we stayed at the hotel across the street because it was cheaper, and that experience was *awful*. The second year, we stayed here, it was night and day better, so we've been recommending it ever since even when it was a little more expensive, which the past couple years it hasn't even been (this year it was a hilariously cheap 45 bucks a night! That is *crazy* cheap). I was a little nervous this year when I saw it was no longer part of a chain, and saw some tripadvisor reviews saying it had gone downhill, but I stayed there anyway last weekend, and my experience was pretty much the same as it's been previous years, so I figured I should update my review to reflect the ownership change and to put a newer timestamp on it.
Front desk when I was there was *absolutely* friendly and professional. Actually, when I arrived around 8 PM on a Thursday, I was informed that they were booked up on the cheapest room (the one I'd booked), so how would I feel about a complimentary upgrade? I said sure, obviously. The upgraded room wasn't that much nicer than the cheapest room I've stayed at in the past, but it certainly wasn't worse, either; basically the same room, just with a bit more space. Checkout was quick and just as friendly, too, and I was charged completely the expected amount. I fully got the impression that if there had been anything I was unhappy about, they would have tried their hardest to fix it (though I can't be sure, as I didn't have the opportunity to verify that, as there was never anything I was unhappy enough about to ask.)
It is absolutely a budget hotel, so you get what you would expect at a budget hotel in terms of amenities, but as far as my own experiences at this and other budget hotels go, this one is so much better than the average in terms of things like cleanliness, staff friendliness, things working, etc, it's not even funny. As in previous years, everything was clean as far as I could tell, AC and thermostat worked great, included fridge worked great, shower and toilet both worked great, wifi worked... well enough (you could tell it was trying hard to keep up with a dozen geeks there to attend a geek convention, but it didn't fail *too* badly at it). The bed wasn't a luxury bed, but it wasn't bad, either (actually, I have to say, the pillows were some of the nicest hotel pillows I've used, including at hotels we've stayed at for like 8 times the cost).
Breakfast is clearly cheap (reminded me of camp food as a kid), but it is still real, hot, moderately fresh food, not the usual assortment of crappy prepackaged pastries and nothing else that you expect at a place this inexpensive.
I will absolutely continue to recommend people stay at this hotel if they need a place to crash in the area.
