| - Regent Square is never a 'destination' of mine, unless I actually hear of something interesting playing at the Regent Square Theater. Regent Square is usually a 'pass through' en route to the Habitat for Humanity Restore, or a cut off the parkway heading for Squirrel Hill. But this morning a friend was braving the blizzard for an acupuncture session in Regent Square, and we hit the Square Cafe for breakfast.
I had seen the lines when occasionally passing through, and had seen previous reviews talking about the place being packed with a wait, so this morning the blizzard was serendipitous to our being able to get in with no problems.
We only had about 30 minutes to order, eat and run, and so we did just that. First came the coffee...not bad...not quite a thick rich cup that my mouth generally prefers (I am a big fan of coffee with coffee in it, like Cuban, Turkish, Arabic - not just brown Pittsburgh water) but it wasn't just (as my late best friend and I used to call it) TEAffee. It was a decent cup of morning Joe-merican. I do have to say that the coffee cups were a little weird, and took some adjusting to drink out of.
Prices? A little high for breakfast, but manageable. I didn't have a lot of time to scope all of the options, but in the time that I did have, I looked through the crepes and egg options, trying to keep carbs at a minimum. Most of the descriptions included either 'onions' or 'peppers', which my stomach can't handle at the best of times, definitely not for breakfast, and although some of them looked good if the onions or peppers weren't there, I didn't have time to play Meg Ryan in 'When Harry Met Sally', so I just opted for what I knew I could have, and ordered the chicken crepe with leeks.
Very tasty, decent size. I did kind of get the feeling that perhaps the crepe had been pre-made and then filled, because portions of the crepe were definitely cold, whereas the filling was quite piping hot. Nonetheless, it was a delicious and filling quick breakfast option.
The waitress was excellent, fast, friendly, and accommodating, even allowing us to take what was left of our coffee to go, since we were running late for his poking appointment (as we drank coffee, my mind envisioned him getting acupuncture, and then like a cartoon, erupting like a coffee sprinkler system), and she topped off the paper cups for us.
Now I'm not so sure that I would wait in a line for very long for a table, or that I would say 'Hey, let's go THERE for breakfast' since I don't live in the area. But if I was in the area, and another natural disaster prevented the trendy throngs from leaving their houses to stand in a line for some eggs, I'd certainly give it another go.
