  • My love affair with La Cave has been a long standing one filled with late night laughs, great cheese, awesome memories and tasty brews. When I lived in Cleveland Heights, this is where I'd end up when my friends wanted to dance at McNulty's. Somehow, winding down in a super-chill bar with cool peeps and a great beer just sounded so much more appealing to me. Weird, huh? I mean, the alternative was getting sweaty in a crowded bar, ruining my hair (which is a total no-no) and waiting an hour for a drink. Ehh, I think I'll pass. La Cave is a Cleveland secret that you only know about if you accidentally find it or a cool friend tips you off. Tucked away in the dark basement of a building on Coventry, it truly does give you that "cave" vibe. Depending which way you come in, you'll see the biggest walk-up beer cooler of your life. Love a strange brew that you can't seem to find anywhere around town? Mostly likely you'll find it in that cooler. I think you'd probably have to solve a labyrinth to navigate your way through that thing. It's like this glowing shrine of divine-ness calling out to you though the dimness of the bar...."ahhhhhhhhhhhh". The staff is smart, funny and very knowledgeable. Sometimes you don't even need to ask, they'll just start talking to you about the history of some wine or beer they have. It's incredible. My only gripe is that the crowd can sometimes sway two ways that are a little annoying: 1) Case Western grad student night out or 2) Über hipster take-over. I can get along with all sorts of people, but when an entire bar is filled, it gets a little weird. Although for the most part, La Cave is just a plethora of interesting and fun Cleveland folks. Besides, the bar itself is cool enough to totally trump any sort of undesirable crowd. The cheese board is the best. thing. ever. I could seriously live a happy and long life if all I ate was good cheese, fruit and crackers. Basically I could live off of cheese boards. Don't judge. Anyways, this particular one is so tasty and a perfect addition to a great wine or beer. Wait...what am I doing tonight? Oh, and added bonus! They showcase local artists! Yes, I know I'm always talking about this, but I find it really important. It's actually nice to see how many Cleveland businesses are doing that these days. Anyways, enough time wasting. Consider this your 'tip'. Get to La Cave now. Chill vibe, great wines, huge beer selection, divine cheese board, knowledgeable and fun staff. Done deal!
