  • The vets here are 5 stars without a doubt but it's some of the other staff that bring this rating down. 2.5 years ago our minpin laid down on his side and could not get up. He was defecting & vomiting uncontrollably all while being unable to stand & Alta Vista took him in immediately. Turns out our little guy had pancreatitis & this office took such good care of him & gave us all the tools to help ensure he would never have a flare up like that again. After this I trusted them implicitly with his well being. We moved to Tempe but our loyalty stayed with Alta vista. The vets have helped him with a lipoma, allergy issues, and eye colds as well as his routine vaccinations. Fast forward to June 2016 when we found another lipoma, this one in his groin & as we watched it over the next few months it grew from the size of a grape to the size of a large egg. November 2016 we took him in and the vet recommended it be removed, so we set the date for surgery. Due to the rapid growth of the mass the vet explained it could be a hernia & not a lipoma, as these can show up the same during the cytology, but they wouldn't know for sure until they got in there. The morning of his procedure I brought him in at 7am & the vet tech explained he would go under between 10-11am and if he needed a hernia repair it would be about a 45 min procedure. She said I would be called when he was in recovery. I was a reck all morning waiting for the call that never came. At 130pm I called them & after being quickly transferred when I gave my dogs name I really panicked. After a few mins someone picked up the phone and explained they were very busy and he was up next for surgery. I was a little irritated that no one could call me & let me know but I understand they are helping many pets and let it go. Just before 3pm they called me & stated he was in recovery and doing well. I asked the lady of the phone if it was a hernia or a lipoma & she told me it was a hernia & that I could pick him up at between 530-6pm. I was feeling more at ease knowing he was okay and 20 mins later my phone rang with Alta vista on the caller ID. Panic ran threw me as I'm sure you can imagine & I answered. It was a different woman than the last I spoke with and she told me the other lady made a mistake and that it did end up being a lipoma removal, not a a hernia. She defended the other lady's mistake by stating the entire staff would have bet it was a hernia and so they were referring to my dog as "hernia dog" all day & that's why she told me it was a hernia repair. I composed myself on the phone as I was happy my dog was doing well but I was livid!!! How impersonal & unprofessional. I appreciate the honesty but knowing you didn't even refer to my dog as his name or breed, how else can I assume you treated him? I never confronted the issue with the office staff. I was too focused on my dogs recovery, which was a lot of work considering drain tube care, medication & activity limitation with an energetic, active little guy. I can say all post-op appointments were smooth & he has healed & recovered without a hitch. Now I just debate returning. On one hand, every vet at this office has been kind and helpful, aiding my dog with all health issues, but on the other hand, those few unprofessional staff members put such a bad taste in my mouth & these employees are the ones spending the most time around my dog. Hopefully he won't have the need for a vet visit anytime soon but should he need one I'm. It sure what I will do.
