| - Roosevelt Row cannot be understood as a literal row, since there a couple blocks of independent shops, art galleries and food joints. This area is otherwise known as the Arts District of downtown Phoenix. The challenge in navigating Roosevelt Row was distinguishing whether these historical house-like buildings were actual business establishments, but that ambiguity adds to the character of this place, I guess. Honestly, we didn't end up at more than 4 houses because many establishments were closed when we went on Saturday and even Monday. Also, the unassuming art galleries can be awkward to walk inside, when you are in a small space with the actual artist, pretending to be interested in a $700+ abstract painting that you have no intention of buying. I was most grateful for them sharing their A/C space with us for the brief 5 minutes while I cooled down from the heat.
Most unique highlight is the street art and hipster feel of this place, but in the 100+ degree weather, it's impossible to enjoy it without stepping inside a random store time to time (that is, if it is open).
